Fine quality papier-mache tray with scalloped edge and impressed makers mark 'B. Walton & Co, Warranted' verso.
An exceptionally good example decorated with a rural landscape featuring a village church to the center of the tray. This gentle scene is, in turn, surrounded by flowers and fine trailing gilt swags of naturalistic form. The delicate gilt work in stark contrast to the black ground.
This style of decoration used by the Walton artists became known as the 'Wolverhampton style' and evolved from the japanning processes developed to emulate decorative lacquer-work found in East Asia.
A technically wonderful piece of highly decorative artwork in excellent condition.
