A very decorative Japanese Tansu chest from the fourth quarter of the Edo period.
A traditional Japanese two part chest with iron carry handles that are also used to secure the two sections of the chest when used together. Chests of this type would have traditionally been used for storing clothing.
Decorated with a chinoiserie overlay featuring flowers and foliage on black ground. This chest features two long drawers to the upper section with one long and one short drawer to the bottom section along with a door which open to reveal two smaller drawers all with iron drop handles one of which is a later replacement.
An incredibly attractive and useful piece of storage furniture that will function well as originally intended. Available in very good condition with only minor paint losses.
