A large oil on canvas titled Cinderella by the Welsh female artist Mia Arnesby Brown nee Edwards (1867-1931).
The painting depicts a girl sat on a stool reading to two further young girls sat on an adjacent settle. The youngest led on the lap of the child sat next to her.
The painting is technically wonderful with the artists use of light in contrast to the areas of deep shadow being exceptionally good. The subjects appear to be sat within a dimly lit rustic interior. The girl reading is sat side-on to the light source with the pages of her book and the folds in her dress illuminated. This is in stark contrast to the youngest child, who is led in the shadows opposite her. The child supporting her on the settle to her left has the light catching on the side of her face. bringing her facial features into greater focus.
An incredibly atmospheric portrayal of this beautiful and gentle scene. The painting draws you in and through the shadows, further detail becomes evident to the viewer.
The painting is signed in the artists maiden name 'Mia Edwards' bottom left and is in excellent condition having been professional cleaned by an art conservator.
Mia Arnesby Brown nee Edwards was a Welsh painter particularly noted for her portraits of children. Her work was exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts in London and she gained acclaim for her works Mary Reading and The Garden Boy. Her works feature in a number of notable collections including the National Museum Wales, the Norfolk Museums Service and the Leamington Spa Art Gallery and Museum.
