Early C19th Vernacular Painted Pine Lambing Chair

A good example of a vernacular lambing chair constructed from painted pine.

The design features boarded sides and a paneled back with a shaped crest rail and side wings. At the mid point, generous, shaped arm supports above a boarded seat. A single full width drawer provides under seat storage.

The name derives from the practice of shepherds using such chairs during the demanding lambing season whilst staying up late at night to monitor ewes and care for newborn lambs. The design of these chairs with raked back rests, provided shepherds with a comfortable seat with side wings that protected them from draughts.
