A very well painted oil on canvas portrait of a Fijian lady by Australian artist Mary Edwards (1894-1988) signed and dated bottom right.
The portrait in three quarter view captures the young Fijian woman wearing a blue 'V' neck top with short sleeves against a bright green background of foliage. The facial details and fabric folds to the sleeve are particularly good.
A bright, colourful and skilfuly painted portrait.
Mary Edwards studied at the East Sydney Technical College. During the 1920's she exhibited with the Royal Art Society and was a finalist for the Archibald Prize in 1921 and 1922. She went on to exhibit with the Australian Watercolour Institute from 1935 to 1945
Later known as Mary Edwell-Burke, the artist lived for much of her later life in Fiji.
Signed Mary Edwards and dated 36.
