A truly wonderful water colour painting by Gertrude Crompton titled 'Palazzo in Venice' signed bottom left.
The artist has captured a view of a grand Venetian house from the adjacent canal. The viewer looks over water in the foreground toward a set of steps leading up from the waters edge to the entrance of the palazzo. The entrance framed by a pair of gate pillars, lush green foliage, and mooring pillars set at slightly odd angles to the other architectural features.
The palazzo in the mid-ground with it's shaped cornice against the blue sky beyond. The use of colour and light in this painting is superb. The garden bathed in light, reflecting back off the properties facade in sharp contrast to the outer boundary which is in deep shadow. This draws the viewers focus in through the gateway and evokes a strong desire to explore further into the hidden garden area.
Gertrude Crompton (Mrs G. Hall) was born in West Tanfield, Yorkshire and educated in London, studying art at Westminster School of Art and then in Paris. She is recorded as living in Kensington and Fowey in Cornwall. In the late 1940's she moved to Nailsworth Gloucestershire.
She was a member of the St Ives Society of Artists and exhibited at the Royal Institute of painters in watercolours, Paris Salon, Society of Women Artists, St Ives Society of Artists, the renowned Goupil Gallery, International Society of Sculpters, Painters and Gravers
