A Fine papier-mache tray depicting a church interior with figures. Impressed 'B. Walton & Co, Warranted' verso.

The scalloped edge of the tray with gilt decoration, creating a gold background to the painting. The use of black and gold follows on through the painting depicting and enhancing areas of bright light in stark contrast to the areas of deep shadow within the body of the church.

This style of decoration used by the Walton artists became known as the 'Wolverhampton style' and evolved from the japanning processes developed to emulate decorative lacquer-work found in East Asia.
