A good 19th Century bow back armchair attributed to architect and designer Edward William Godwin.
Constructed in Elm, the arm bow is supported by seven bobbin turned supports above a well figured single plank circular saddled seat. All raised on four out-swept legs united by turned cross stretchers. The front centrally positioned leg also features bobbin turnings and is a notable design feature of this iconic chair.
Born in Bristol in 1833, Godwin was a progressive architect and designer perhaps best known for the 'Ruskinian Gothic' Northampton Guildhall and his designs in the 'Anglo-Japanese' taste influenced from the International Exhibition of 1862.
Of excellent colour and condition with some early worm holes which do not effect the structural integrity of this solid and very comfortable chair.
The chair would make an excellent desk chair and would sit well within a period or contemporary setting.
English Circa 1870
H: 78 cm (seat height 45 cm)
W: 63 cm (45.5 cm between arm supports)
D: 62 cm (seat depth 49 cm)
