Robert Cleminson was a prominent London-based British painter active from the mid-1860s until his death in 1903. Renowned as a premier Victorian sporting artist, he specialised in oil depictions of animals, British wildlife, and dramatic Highland landscapes.
His oil paintings are executed with fluid, confident brushwork and a rich, natural palette. He typically signed his completed works in the lower left or lower right corners as ''R. Cleminson''.
Cleminson frequently exhibited his works in major London venues including The British Institution (Pall Mall) and The Society of British Artists (Suffolk Street). His works can be found in a number of public and private collections including The Bowes Museum, Newport Museum and Art Gallery and Bantock House.
