Large wooden sculpture by Tony Basil, former head stone mason at Castle Hill Estate, Filleigh, Devon, home of the Fortescue family since the C15th.
The sculpture carved out of a single piece of yew, features ten female heads. The platted hair to the one subject and disheveled hair of another is particularly good.
The sculpture is available along with an exhibition stone carved with the sculptors name. This was understood to have been used by Tony Basil when exhibiting wood carvings locally.
The wood has previously been oiled and shows no sign of having been kept outside which may account for it's good condition (only minor shrinkage cracks with no losses or other damage).
